Rosemary Oil for Hair Growth

Rosemary Oil for Hair Growth

Does Rosemary Oil help hair growth in children?

A hot topic these days is the use of Rosemary shampoo to help promote hair growth in children and adults. Rosemary Oil is commonly used in hair care products and many believe it improves circulation in the scalp which can indirectly promote hair growth. Rosemary is a powerful herb but there is only anecdotal evidence at this point that rosemary oil can grow hair.

Human studies regarding rosemary and hair growth are limited. A small study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association of Dermatology in 2015 found a mixture of rosemary oil and other essential oil, when applied topically, let to significant hair growth improvements with participants with alopecia. However, larger and more rigorous studies do need to be conducted to draw more conclusive evidence.

Promoting healthy hair growth in children involves a well-balanced diet and proper hair care practices. Key ingredients that can help support hair and overall hair health in kids include:

1 – Protein for Hair Growth:

Hair is made up of protein – it’s called Keratin! Get it naturally from sources such as lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy and beans.

2 – Vitamins for Hair Growth:
Vitamin A:  helps with the production of sebum (oil) which keeps the scalp moisturized. Found in carrots, spinach, leafy greens and sweet potatoes.

Vitamin C: promotes collagen which is essential for hair growth. Found in citrus fruits and strawberries.

Vitamin D: plays an important role in the health of hair follicles. Plenty of sunlight is imperative but can be found in fatty fish and fortified dairy products.

Vitamin E: helps with blood circulation to the scalp. Spinach, seeds and nuts are great sources of vitamin E.

3 – Minerals for Hair Growth:

Iron: lean meats, beans, dark leafy veggies can ensure your child is not deficient as this can cause hair loss.

Zinc: nuts, seeds and whole grains are a great source of zinc to help support hair growth and hair repair.

4 – Hydrating Hair:

Proper hydration is essential for everyone! Ensure your child is getting adequately hydrated throughout the day to help with overall health as well as hair health.

5- Scalp Exfoliation:

Regularly massaging your child’s scalp gently with your fingertips during bath time can help improve blood circulation that directly leads to hair follicles.

6 – Gentle Shampoos and Conditioners Not all shampoos are equal and children need gentler shampoos and conditioners. Avoid shampoos with harsh chemicals such as sulfates and phthalates that can damage and dry out the hair.  Look for products that are specifically designed for children’s hair care.

7 – Sleep and Hair Growth!  Always make sure your child gets a restful night’s sleep. Sleep is essential for mental and physical wellbeing – including hair growth!

Hair growth in children is a combination of healthy eating, proper hair care products and an overall healthy lifestyle.  While studies do show that rosemary oil might be beneficial for hair growth, remember that genetics will play a large role as well as the above-mentioned nutritional tips.
